THE United Kingdom martial arts community has bestowed one of its top honours upon a Tavistock instructor.

Peter Smith, chief Instructor at Tavistock based Brit Spirit Martial Arts, was inducted into the Black Belt ‘Hall of Fame’ at the UK Martial Arts Show earlier this month in Yorkshire. Held at the iconic Dome in Doncaster, the award ceremony followed two days of demonstrations and training opportunities with the top martial artists from across the nation.

This is Peter’s second industry award for his dedication and services to the martial arts - the first time in 2015.

The award ceremony was hosted by the editor of Martial Arts Illustrated magazine, Bob Sykes and the honours were presented by American kickboxing legend and screen star Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace.

‘Superfoot’ retired as the undefeated, undisputed World Kickboxing champion. He has starred in films with the likes of Jackie Chan, Stephen Seagal and Chuck Norris and he also ran Elvis Presley’s karate school in the USA.

Peter said: ‘It was a truly awe inspiring evening. Being in a room with over 100 top martial artists is quite an experience, meeting and sharing a stage with some of the heroes of your youth and some of the rising stars of the martial arts scene.

‘Receiving this award is a great honour for me and having Bill “Superfoot” Wallace present it to me was the icing on the cake. Bill personally graded me for my kickboxing third dan back in 2013, so receiving this from him in person was very special. This is the second industry award I have received on behalf of Brit Spirit Martial Arts so I take that as an indication that the club is doing something right!’

His club, Brit Spirit Martial Arts, is based in Tavistock, with classes held at Tavistock Community College, Mount Kelly School and in Callington.

Peter also teaches in schools and colleges in the local area on a regular basis as well as arranging training sessions for local businesses and community groups.

The club teaches Little Dragons classes for 4 to 6 year olds, Taekwon-do classes for ages 7 to adult and Superfoot System Kickboxing classes.

In addition, they run self-defence courses periodically, on demand.
